Food: Is it an Art or Not?
By Gabby S
How many of you think you know what culinary arts mean? You’re probably thinking that it means food, right? Well, according to Wikipedia, culinary arts are the art of cooking or preparing food. It also can be the art of having food or table arts. You’re probably thinking, “Oh what is she talking about, culinary arts is just food that you cook than eat.” Well, have you ever realized that food can be more than just something you put in your mouth?
Is cooking food an art? While thinking about it, I asked Mr. Rae, a culinary arts teacher at Binghamton High School. Mr. Rae agrees that cooking food is an art. When I asked him what makes it an art he replied, “To balance colors, to make the food visually appealing, and the creativity needed to make the food look visually appealing.” I also asked Mr. Rae if he thinks BHS has a good culinary arts program, and he had said, “Yes. Every year it’s getting better and better. In a couple of years, Binghamton High School will have one of the best culinary arts programs.”
Adia M, a student at Binghamton High School, also agrees that cooking is an art. When I asked her what makes it an art, she replied, “The way you prepare and present the food. I feel like food can have a lot of color and flavor and it can look like a painting.” Then I asked her if BHS offers a great culinary arts program and she said, “Yes, I know a lot of students that take culinary arts and they have a great time.”
Alexis D, another student at Binghamton High School, also believes that cooking is an art. She believes that the way someone presents food, cooks food, and makes the food look colorful is what makes it an art. Not only did she say that food could be art in school, but that it could be art anywhere in the world. She told me, “Food isn’t just something you eat; it’s something that can be amazing to look at.”
