Music is a very important aspect of everyday life, and most people would agree that they listen to music in everyday. But what music is most popular from the perspective of kids and teens? How much do these kids listen to music? How is it effecting these kids?
I had some questions about this, so I spoke to a friend, Nafisah, who attends Binghamton High School and is a freshman. I asked her, “What is your opinion on today’s popular music?” She said, “Some music is degrading to people and it’s embarrassing the U.S., but its fun.” She also says that her parents do not want her listening to rap and heavy metal. Nafisah somewhat agrees with rap because it is sometimes degrading to women and sometimes it talks about drugs. Nafisah belives that music effects teens because some music talks about drugs, alcohol, and some other generally bad things. And in turn, it makes the percentages for this behavior increase.
I also talked to another friend who is a student at Binghamton. Hannah is a freshman and, according to her, today’s music is more explicit than ever. Her parents do not want her to listen to explicit music, but for the most part they don’t mind. Hannah listens to music almost all of the time, but she doesn’t think kids should listen to the explicit music because it effects how they behave, like how they act and talk. These were very intriguing ideas from some of the students from Binghamton High School.
I also asked another student, Madison, about some of her views on the topic and she had similar views.
This shows that music is a important aspect to life for teenagers at Binghamton High but someone should take action against the more explicit music and block it from the young minds of children. Now I’m not saying that music is why good kids go bad, I’m just saying it is a part of the reason because of the way it influences them. Music is such a great thing; it can do so much for you. It can make you happy when your sad. It can inflict any emotion on you. It is one way that many people today, and even I, express themselves. Music can truly do anything! It once stopped a war; if music can stop a war, it can do anything. Some people might agree that music can relive depression better than a therapist can.
So, if music can do all of this, why should we hate it?
